This photo is for all those of you who think that the only part of Tuscany worth its salt-less bread is near Florence or Sienna. Please, take a gander at this little village, a gem of a borgo... or, stone village... in the Lunigiana... in Tuscany!!!
Mezzana is perched on a hill above Codiponte, which is down on the other-side. The stone church & its stone capanile is on the right, nestled in a grove of cipresi... or cedars. The stone village runs along one single road. And, the stone cemetary is on the left, again, marked out by its collection of cipresi. Normally, in the central "classic" part of Tuscany... San Gimignano & its ilk around... any house to Medici villa is stucco-ed & painted in A Standard Issue cream. But look... stone!!! And hey... no traffic-jam of campers sporting bikes & scooters with German tags, pre-fab factories & warehouses, construction cranes, bed & breakfast or agro-turismi littering the landscape. Only a truly authentic Tuscan borgo, as it has been for a 1,000 years... in the Lunigiana. Gads.
